Description

“Proserpine” and “Midas” are two verse dramas written by Mary Shelley in 1820. Both stories are adaptations of classical tales and are written in blank verse. Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary’s husband, also contributed lyric poems to the two plays. Mary found little success in her attempts to publish the stories. Written as juvenile fiction, she hoped to release them in children’s publications but was rejected. “Proserpine” was not published until 1832. “Midas” was not in print during Mary’s lifetime. Literary scholar André Koszul first published it in 1922. “Proserpine” is an adaptation of the Roman poet Ovid’s take on the Greek myth of the seasons. Shelley, however, focuses on the female point of view in the story. She emphasizes Ceres’ love for her daughter and the determination in her search. She features themes of motherly love, community and kindness. “Midas,” on the other hand, is an androcentric tale of greed and ego. King Midas’ primary concern is his affection for gold and riches, but when his wish works against him, he realizes his mistakes. In her writing, Shelley demonstrates a good command of the English language. Her descriptions and writing style, which often focus on elements of daily life, are similar to other female authors of her time.
